The Perfect Doghouse

Are you considering adding a doghouse to your 4S Ranch yard? If so, we are willing to bet you will soon have one very happy pooch on your hands. We’re guessing your dog probably lives indoors, but if your furry buddy spends a lot of time in your yard, he may love a home of his own.

There are several styles of doghouse available. Igloos, castles, bungalows, cabins … the list of ‘dogitectural’ styles is growing. You don’t need to spend a fortune to give your pup a cute home, though. Incorporating details like a little porch, painted trim, or windows can make your pup’s home much more appealing. You can make your pup’s house match the style of your house, or do something different and use an opposite style for a bit of contrast.

Build Or Buy?

The easiest way to get a doghouse, of course, is to buy one. You can get a basic doghouse for around $100, while ‘luxury’ models can run quite a bit more. If you’re handy with tools, however, you can build a doghouse within a few days, at a fraction of the cost of buying one whole. Do a search online for plans: you may be surprised at how many options there are. There are a few safety concerns to keep in mind when building Fido his second home. Size is first and foremost, as you’ll want to make sure your furry friend has ample room inside. You’ll also have to be careful when choosing materials. Be sure to pick only lumber that is untreated or nontoxic. Make sure any nails are fully pounded in, so your furry pal doesn’t hurt himself.

One benefit of building a doghouse is that you can customize it any way you want. If you have two dogs, you can make them a little duplex. If your dog loves water, you can incorporate a doggy wading pool into Fido’s back yard. Dogs who love tennis balls, for instance, may enjoy a feature that includes rope fixture with a tennis ball on the end. If your canine buddy is a female, you can add flower boxes to make her home pretty.

If you like, you can dedicate part of your yard to Fido by adding a dog pen or dog run, and configuring it so that it is attached to Fido’s doghouse, so that when your pooch is in the yard, he can run or relax as he chooses. Last but not least, you can really personalize your pup’s doghouse by adding his name to it.
