Hamster Nutrition

Have you recently adopted a hamster? Hamsters are one of the most popular pocket pets, and with good reason. These little furballs are quite gentle, are very easy to care for, and are super cute. Often chosen as starter pets, hamsters are a fun and endearing addition to any family. Like any pet, hamsters need a proper habitat, mental stimulation, and a suitable diet to be truly healthy and happy. In this article, your vet 4S Ranch goes over some basics of proper nutrition for hamsters.

Basic Diet

You can choose a commercial food as the staple part of your little pet’s diet. While your furball will probably happily munch on any type of food, there are a few things to be aware of when choosing your furry buddy’s food. Mixes that have a high amount of sunflower seeds should be avoided, as they contain more fat than your little one needs.

Fruits And Veggies

In addition to Hammie’s basic diet, he will need a bit of variety to keep him from getting bored with an unchanging menu. Fruits and veggies are a great way to give your little furball some extra nutrition and spice up his meal plan. Seedless apples, melons, cherries, cantaloupes, cranberries, mangos, raspberries, and strawberries are some of the fruits your pet may enjoy. Asparagus, bean sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, clover, turnip, and parsnips are a few of the vegetables you can give a hamster.

It’s fairly safe to say that all pets enjoy treats, and hamsters are no exception! You can give your little pal small bits of boiled egg; tiny pieces of cheese, cooked, unseasoned beef, or chicken; and birdseed mix for a special snack. Grasshoppers, mealworms, and crickets are also on Hammie’s list of favorite treats. Some more things your furry buddy can enjoy are buckwheat, unsalted peanuts and popcorn, dry toast, flax seed, and lentils. Alfalfa, unsalted pumpkin seeds, and oatmeal are also fine.

Foods To Avoid

Hamsters have large appetites, but those little tummies are quite sensitive! There are many things which can make your little one sick. Never give a hamster almonds, apple seeds, citrus fruits, watermelon, garlic, onions, scallions, chives, tomato leaves, pickles, or jams and jellies. Raw potatoes, kidney beans, eggplant, chocolate, candy and junk food are also no-no’s.
