Grooming Your Rabbit

Do you have a pet bunny? If so, you’ve got a very adorable pet! One of the most charming qualities about rabbits is their soft, silky fur. Bunnies are very good about grooming themselves, but they aren’t entirely self-sufficient. These little furballs do need regular grooming to look and feel their best. In this article, your Poway vet gives some tips on grooming rabbits.

Basics

All bunnies shed, and some are prone to getting tangles in their fur. Most rabbits need to be brushed at least two times a week. If your furry friend has long hair, she’ll need to be groomed daily. Many bunnies like being brushed, especially if they know there’s a yummy snack coming after their beauty regimen!

Supplies

You’ll need to pick up some bunny-grooming supplies. Your furball’s beauty kit should include a brush with medium or soft bristles, a flea comb, a mat rake (for long-haired rabbits), cotton balls, toenail clippers, and a styptic pencil.

What To Do

Put your furball on your lap or a table. We advise putting a towel beneath her to gather any dead hair and clippings, and to prevent scratches. Use the brushes and combs to get any tangles or snarls out of her coat, and remove dead hair. Be very gentle, as bunny skin is quite delicate! Talk to your furry pal in a soothing voice, so she knows she’s being pampered. Use a cotton ball to gently remove any ear wax or eye ‘sand’. You’ll also need to clip your bunny’s nails when they start getting too long. The time frame for this varies: it can be from one to six months.

Health Check

While you’re grooming your furball, take the opportunity to give her a quick health check. Feel for any bumps, cuts, or swelling, and inspect your pet’s fur for any signs of fleas. You’ll also want to check her teeth and nails to make sure they aren’t overgrowing. Watch for any discharge or redness in your pet’s eyes and ears as well.

When you’re all done with your pet’s grooming, make sure to give her a delicious treat!
