Pet Fire Safety Day

Did you know that July 15th is officially Pet Fire Safety Day? This is a great time to talk about fire safety and prevention for our furry friends. Read on as a local Poway, CA vet discusses some key aspects of pet fire safety.

Basic Precautions

Make sure your furry pal is microchipped, and is wearing current ID tags. You’ll also want to keep up with your pet’s vaccines. If you ever have to evacuate because of a fire, you may need to prove that your four-legged buddy is up to date with vaccinations, so keep copies of your pet’s records in your car. You can also email scanned copies to yourself, so you can access them online from anywhere.

Prevention

Did you know that pets start up to 1000 fires every year? Taking some simple precautions can greatly reduce the odds of this happening in your home. Be very careful with candles: keep them in high, secure places your furkid can’t access. Also, never leave pets unattended near burning candles. If you have a gas stove and a big dog, get childproof burner knobs, so Fido can’t turn it on with his nose. Also, don’t use glass bowls on wooden decks: these can start fires!

Fire Emergency Kit

We recommend having an emergency kit ready for your furbaby. Include a week’s worth of food and treats; water; bedding; toys; a first-aid kit; and recent pictures of your pet. Fido will also need a leash and collar, while Fluffy should have a litter pan and litter. Keep these things in a plastic tote, near your pet’s carrier. That way, if a fire ever threatens your area and you have to evacuate, you’ll have everything you need in one place.

Helpful Tips

Firefighters understand that pets are beloved family members, and will often do whatever they can to save our furry friends. There are a few things you can do to make this easier for them. Put pet fire stickers on your windows. Include basic information, such as how many pets you have, what kind of animals they are, and where they like to hide. A monitored security system with smoke detectors is also a great way to protect your home.
